The percent of WIC eligibles served is the number served divided by the estimated number in need, expressed as a percentage. Knowing the proportion of those in need who are served supports promoting healthful diets and healthy weight to optimize health status and quality of life. WIC eligibles include pregnant and post-partum women and children ages 0-4. The number of WIC eligibles served is the number of people who were issued benefits during September, the last month of the federal fiscal year. WIC provides nutritious foods, nutrition education, breastfeeding support, and referrals to health care and social services to low-income families with a nutritional risk.
